The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea is divided from the mainland by the Strait of Messina. The Sicilian coast and its small islands lie at the slopes of the volcanoes Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano. The Sicilian soils, rich in limestone, and the excellent climate of the island allow the production of peculiar grapes, from which fine wines are obtained.

The island more and more often defined as the "Island of Wine", relies, for its wine production, on 140 000 hectares of vineyards, most of which are of white grapes. This large production is mainly concentrated in three major districts: the West district that covers the area of Trapani, in the Val di Mazara, the island of Pantelleria and some municipalities in the area of Palermo, Caltanissetta and Agrigento; the north-eastern district, which includes the area of Etna, the Val Demone and the Aeolian Islands and the south-eastern district that covers the area of Syracuse, Val di Noto and Ragusa. The vineyards are distributed as follows: 65% on the hills, 30% on the plains and the remaining 5% in the mountains. It can be stated that Trapani, (with its 87.000 hectares) is the most productive area of western Sicily, followed by Agrigento and Palermo.

The autochthonous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Inzolia, Catarratto, Zibibbo, and so forth, are now recognised throughout the world for their fine features. Nowadays, a lot of Sicilian wines have the Denominazione d'Origine Controllata e Garantita(DOCG), the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) and "Iindicazione Geografica Tipica" (IGT) appellations. The first recognised D.O.C. was the Marsala. At present, the D.O.C. wines are 23. One wine, the Cerasuolo di Vittoria, made it for the DOCG appellation. Remarkable is, in general, the variety of Sicilian wines: there are 28 native grapevines. The main varieties currently grown in the island are the Catarratto Bianco and Trebbiano Toscano, in addition to the most famous Sicilian grapes: Nero d'Avola, followed by Inzolia and Grillo.
